Les changements hydromorphologiques de l’estuaire de la Loire et l’évolution du port de Rezé/Ratiatum (Loire‑Atlantique)

Abstract : In 2005, when a major research programme was initiated with the aim of investigating the ancient district of Saint-Lupien in Rezé (Loire-Atlantique) and its supposed port, little was known about the Loire river landscapes and the dynamics of the river during Antiquity was in its infancy. On-site archaeological and environmental studies, and those developed in parallel on the lower Loire (as part of two collective research programmes –PCR– and a documentary study carried out between 2005 and 2019), have enabled us to discribe the geomorphological entities present in the ancient Loire landscape (islands, channels and alluvial plains) and have provided a fairly fine resolution of the hydrological evolution of the lower Loire from the Bronze Age to the present day. These studies, which subsequently focused on Antiquity and were limited to Rezé, have made it possible to analyse seven centuries of riverside and port development linked to urban life and forced to develop in order to adapt, within a relatively stable eustatic context, to the hydrological crises and changes triggered by climatic fluctuations and/or anthropic pressure, of an ever more fluvial Loire at the bottom of the estuary.
