La Frontière intérieure indienne du Sud-Ouest en Argentine, espace de vie, de mobilité et de transgression

Abstract : An Indian inner Frontier is not in accordance with the usual process of the Spanish Conquest: dominance, evangelization, repartimiento in encomiendas, compulsory labour (mita). Considered as marginal areas because of the survival of indigenous territories, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay had then an atypical process of colonization, more similar to the North-american scheme than to the other Latin-american countries. The Natives of those countries will then strive to safeguard their territories and ways of living, increasingly endangered till the devastating military campaigns of the end of the 19th century. We do not know much about the human aspects of the History of this line yet, «erased» from the collective memory until recently, as to wipe out at the same time the remembrance of an «incomplete conquest» that had transgressed for so long the «natural order», and the figures of ethnic groups seen as barriers to Unlimited Progress, dream of the very young Nation-state.
