La Représentation de l’Arabie Heureuse dans les récits de voyageurs français de la Renaissance à l’époque de la colonisation

Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to shed light on the representation of Arabia Felix among French travelers writers from the 16th to the 19th century. The rise of the coffee trade and expeditions rekindled the curiosity of travelers and scientists who set out to discover a different population and a different social reality. The gaze of these traveling writers is indicative of their certainties, each claiming to describe reality. This is why our attention has focused on the whole focus equally. Arabia Felix, which in the 16th and 17th centuries was considered to be a country hostile to foreigners, became a welcoming country for travelers and the Arab, thief and cruel in the relations of the 16th and 17th centuries, became hospitable and highly civilized in those of the 18th and 19th centuries. The look towards Islam, and in particular its promoter, will also evolve: Muhammad goes from the impostor to the Prophet of Islam.
