Enjeux sociétaux et adaptation des filières aux controverses sur l'élevage

Abstract : Social dimensions and the adaptation of the agro-food sector to controversies on breeding Recently, the livestock sector has been subject to criticisms from different social actors. The agro-food sector and the farmers have been directly questioned about the meanings of their profession. This communication aims at discussing the social issues involved in this dispute. We use the notion of controversy to characterize the triadic conflict involving opponents to and defenders of livestock farming under the eye of the public as a judge. This controversy appears as a moment of redefinition of the social consensus on the acceptability of farming that generates uncertainty on the future of this industry. We argue that the responses of the agro-food sector are not relevant as far as they are addressed in terms of social acceptability of the livestock activity. A change in the controversy would result from the contribution of the livestock industry to create new consensus by promoting practices responding to the challenges to livestock activities.
