L’espace agricole à l’épreuve de la fonction résidentielle. Analyse par groupes de discussion dans trois espaces ruraux de l’Ouest

Abstract : The paper focuses on linkages between the residential function and the agricultural axiology. Giving the voice to diverse stakeholders, we aims to precise the heterogeneous and paradoxal nature of linkages that both uses and values make between farming and dwelling. In three study fields in Britanny, Lower-Normandy and Poitou-Charentes, some focus groups were conducted with farmers, farm-women, citizens, landowner or local councilors. Each group met twice, that is 4 hours of semi-structured interview focusing on farmland, its uses (“for you?”, “for the others?”), and its values. The groups were filmed and their discussions were fully transcribed. The analysis points out that, aside food supply, economic development and rural ambiance, the agricultural spaces are explicitely perceived as contributing to the residential function at local scale. We find fewer difference between farmers and non-farmers than expected. Nevertheless, people use different registers regarding space artifitialization, day-to-day multifunctionnality, agricultural landscape assessment or social values of neighbourly relations. The residential attractiveness of the farmed countryside produces subtle material or symbolic arrangements but updates also new forms of politeness, in the sense of courteous one indifference.
