Abstract : Modernity, which became a first-rank aesthetic issue in Occident after Baudelaire and Rimbaud, still seems to be elusive. The modern posture, which has often been elevated to the level of a myth, and has always been contested, presents itself as an absolute, in spite of its internal contradictions, of the ideological ambiguities it creates, of the difficulty that critics struggle with when they try to identify it objectively, even in spite of postmodernity. It seems to have led several polymorphic lives, even before the 19th century when it grew again as the dominant aesthetic value, so much so that every artistic form which would derogate from its imperative is frowned as suspicious. As the first modern works became classics, the relationships between tradition and critical modernity, a utopia that still escapes us, became crucial, as modernity has come to build its own tradition. These articles aim to analyze how artistic creation, through different times and different places, questions the perhaps fake opposition between tradition and modernity, in order to generate an always renewed expressiveness.
