Du symbolisme de l'arabesque à l'arabesque du symbolisme : remarques sur la musicalité de l'arabesque

Abstract : This article deals with the ornamental, decorative and aesthetic meanings of the arabesque in baroque art and baroque thinking, as well as in symbolist art – especially in Mallarmé’s poetry. The aim is twofold : first, to show how a mobile, undulating and dissonant beauty is being founded on a musical model, and hence on the notion of a musicality of the arts; second, to suggest how a profoundly ironic and reflexive art uses the arabesque as the figure, motif, principle and symbol of a confused representation and of the – optimistic or pessimistic – interplay on which it is based. This interplay is what makes the artwork a critical and expressive force, rather than a stable form.
